Bel Canto means
beautiful singing. It is the technique preferred by Italian opera singers, who use it to obtain a light, bright quality,
with sustained tone.
Although the
origin of the Bel Canto vocal technique is obscure, it is generally attributed the operatic composer Claudio Monteverdi
(1567 1643).
The basic principles
of the technique are as follows:
1)
True bel canto singing is a natural act; an extension of normal speaking and voice expression.
2) Singing must
be mastered internally with correct breath control from the diaphragm transmitted through the chest into the facial masque
giving resonance.
3) When the
singer develops a tone of admirable quality it must be constantly repeated until ingrained in the memory.
A good singing
technique can be created in a few months. Once mastered, keep singing regularly and you will never forget it.
